Description
Meet Kalijon the Bornean Orangutan originally photographed summer 2016 at the Kansas City Zoo which currently houses two male and four female Bornean Orangutans in two separate groups.
One group consists of the male Berani (13 years old) and the female TK (26 years old). Following a breeding recommendation from the AZA Orangutan SSP in 2008, they produced a female offspring, Kalijon. However, Kalijon was keeper reared for a period of five months.
Kalijon was raised in the orangutan holding building by 15 staff members and 10 docents. She had a human mom 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a period of five months. At five months she was able to climb on the mesh and drink a bottle through it. At this time she was introduced to Jill who immediately picked her up and has been caring for her since. For
