Green Backed Heron by Pamela Williams
Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.~ Salvador Dali
Green Backed Heron was photographed on Lake Wyandotte in Kansas City, Kansas summer of 2016. Green-backed herons won't be found in your yard unless your yard contains a pond or a stream partially hidden by trees and understory, preferably with branches partially buried in the water.
They are secretive birds about the size of an American crow, slightly larger than a pileated woodpecker, often confused with the latter in flight on a cloudy day. They are both 18 inches long with a 26-inch wingspan. The difference is the length of the tail. The green-backed heron's tail is so short it is almost missing.
